Operational

Operational Manager
Date: 02 July 2008

The information on this report based on weekly reports from operational staff including teachers, social workers, site manager and admin officer.

Kindergarten
- 27 kids of kindergarten will go to the State school at the next academic year. This including 13 kids from Ms. Kunthea’s class and 14 kids from Ms. Thida’s class.

Group 1 (Teacher Kunthea)
- One child’s parents went to prison for drugs.
- Three were ill
- One was too young and encouraged to stay home
- Another was deemed old enough to go to the higher class.
- Wash their hands, Play traditional Khmer Games, Brush their teeth, and Color the pictures
- Told students to wash their hands before the lesson and have meals, then practice
- Play games and draw pictures
- Teach hygiene and tell them to wash their faces and hands
- Brush their teeth
- Play football for 15 minutes.

Group 2 (Teacher Thida)
- Two visited relatives in another town.
- Seven had colds, sore throats or fevers
- One family switched to a private school, although the social workers are concerned about the family.

Grade School
- 47 kids from Blum Project will be registered at State school next academic year.
- 58 kids who study grade one at Steven, will go to grade two at the new academic year at State school.

Steven House: Group 1 (Teacher Chin Mom)
- Five children skipped school frequently to work collecting garbage, usually due to parental pressure
- Four children skipped school occasionally with behavioural problems.
- Three were sick
- Two had problems at state school and did not want to attend class there
- One went to visit relatives in another town.
- They had English lessons with the i-to-i volunteers
- Studied maths and Khmer language
- Drew and art lessons

Steven House: Group 2 (Teacher Dina)
- One refused to attend class because of behavioural problems
- One was sick and hospitalized
- They had English lessons with the i-to-i volunteers
- Studied maths and Khmer language
- Drew and art lessons

Blum House: (Teacher Chhuon Sokheng)
- One was absent to attend a family wedding
- One moved away from Phnom Penh
- Four were absent for more than a week
- Teach children Khmer alphabets.
- Teach children how to sum and minus the numbers
- Teach children the family trees in order to know their own relatives
- Teach children how to color pictures.
- Lead children to brush their teeth every morning, using brush and tooth past, then

Blum House: Group 2 ( Teacher Eng Sunheak)
- Four went to visit relatives in another town
- Two were absent for more than a week
- All the children have to brush their teeth before and after their class. The teachers show them what they should do with their teeth every day.
- We bought those children tooth past and tooth brush.
- Teach students Khmer syllables
- Teach students hygiene and how to clean their bodies
- Taught students how to introduce themselves to other people
- Tell and lead children to wash their bodies using some materials such as soap, toothbrush, toothpaste and water on Saturday.

Get Ready Girls
- One went to visit relatives in another town
- One was absent most of the month collecting garbage instead of class
- Two others were absent for more than a week
- One moved to study at the state school fulltime
- Around 10 get ready girls has been interviewed by PSE social workers and they will go get further training at PSE in September 2008.
- Other three Get Ready girls get job as housekeepers at Goldiana hotel.

Medical check up
- For the last month of July only seven kids had been assisted to the clinic or hospital for medical treatment.
- The main issues were accidents, toothaches, earaches, typhoid and fevers.

Weekly Boarding
- 18 children in weekly boarding.
- Six of them stay occasionally, frequently returning to sleep or eat with their families for part of the day.
- Two children left weekly boarding now the family crisis is over.
- One trafficking attempt by a step-parent.
- During the election in Cambodia, most the parents of weekly boarders took them home for one week.
- We will try to find the another solution for one long-term boarder, because we are quite worried about her.

Dropouts
- Nine children dropped out of their programs.
- One child transferred to another NGO
- Five moved to other areas, but will allow visits or return
- Two are forced by parents into child labour
- One simply refuses to participate, and family is unhelpful.
- Our social workers visited and discussed a lot with the families, but it was not successful yet. All of the cases above, our social workers will follow up and the result will be reported for next month.

Family Visits
In July the social workers completed 55 cases of family visit. 25 cases, around 45% relating to the kids truant from school. 15 cases equal to 27% relating to the health problem of the kids. 05 cases, equal to 9% relating economic problem of the families. The kids prefer to collect ait chai than going to school. Other cases with around 19 % relating to the parents went to the provinces or went far away from home for over 03 days, therefore, the social workers had to have the family visit.

Visitors/ volunteers
- In July, 2008 there are 15 visitors visited Riverkids Foundation as the following:
- Wendy Sak, Micke Chambos, Julie Jackson, Guin Jackson, Alice David, Aidan Davis, Kim Take Wistreich, Happy Football NGO’s Chao Vibol, Lisa Kingston and Shane Kingston, Nicolette Beetes, Maryknoll and Elizabeth and Par Botes. A family’s absent father also came to visit.
- In July Riverkids had 04 volunteers from Khmer Volunteer Services conducting English Lessons for Get Ready Girls and Grade school students.
- Jane, the volunteer from USA helps to process of documents including proposal writing and report wring.
- Heli, the volunteer from Sweden helps to train the kindergarten teachers.
- Around 30 kids including the get ready girls and the grade school kids attend the football training every Saturday under conducting of the Happy Football NGO and the assistance of Riverkids staff.
- At the Blum house, we completed the first step of Renovation of the Wall, the kitchen and the ceiling

Constraints:
- Riverkids staff do not have enough space for their Office
- Electricity is cut off more often

Requirements:
- Need one computer room.
- Improve condition of the building
- Need the Headquarter for RiverKids, Cambodia

Next month plan – August 2008
- Organize parents meeting
- Set up one computer room for the kids
- Focus on the file of the kids and families
- Transfer the Get Ready Girls for further training
- Recruit new group of Get Ready Training
- Write proposal to local charities
- Continue second step of Renovation of Blum
- We will move the sawing training to Blum House.
