Before TT’s siblings joined Riverkids, the entire family had been wandering through the streets of Phnom Penh every day for garbage to earn a living. The parents started as farmers, lost their land due to debt, became construction labourers in the city and then lost their jobs again and ended up on the streets with their children.
Today, four siblings are enrolled with Riverkids – one in Kindergarten, two in School Support and one in our Get Ready Program.
Education is essential for children’s future. A child with an education has more than just better job opportunities; they can make their own choices, are informed and independent. They are far less vulnerable to being tricked into trafficking and they will become better parents, breaking the cycle of poverty in Cambodia.
Our Education Programs have been extremely successful and by the end of 2009, we had 410 children enrolled in our educational programs.
