Send a little one to kindergarten. Snacks, playtime and early education mean a bright and hopeful start
At Alexandra, we have two kindergarten classes, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. There are very few kindergartens in Phnom Penh, and none near the slum. We designed a Cambodian-relevant curriculum that encourages creativity and co-operation, trained teachers and assistants, and got one started!
Children at risk for trafficking and aged 3 to 7 years old are taught the basics of reading and writing in Khmer, as well as playing games, drawing and colouring, puppets, fingerpainting and all the joys of kindergarten.
When the teachers assess that a child is ready for Grade One, we work with their families to enroll them in the local state school. Riverkids has seen more than sixty of our little guys and girls go on to state school, and they are doing much better than their peers thanks to their headstart!
We hope to raise funds for a kindergarten at Blum by May 2010.
