July 2006 project manager's report

Children’s issues
• All 4 children in Grade 3 have passed their exams and can go to Grade 4 next school term.
• Among the 22 children in Grade 1, 20 will go to Grade 2 next school term. The other 2 will repeat Grade 1 and get more help from Riverkids’ teachers.
• Among the 12 children regularly attending kindergarten, 3 are ready for Grade 1 next year and will switch to tuition with the other children during the school holidays to prepare.
• No new children were added this month.
• We have space for up to 5-6 more children during August, but then will be completely full.

Weekly boarding
• We have 18 children in weekly boarding.
• 13 are long-term due to homelessness, distance from school, or abuse.
• 3 just entered for a trial and 2 are recommended to return to their family post-crisis.
• The weekly boarders were well-behaved.

Family visit
16 pairs of parents came on the 28 July to a meeting with the Riverkids staff to discuss their children and ways to improve their children’s lives. The parents said they trusted the Riverkids staff and project.
The parents requested:
• More children to enter the project and weekly boarding
• Microloans for small businesses
• Concerns about children fighting in Riverkids
• Concerns about mixed gender sleeping arrangements (locks, re-arrangement)
• Changing names to Khmer or Chinese for registration

Staff issues
• A few days of absences reported, most for training or personal issues.
• Two teachers went for a four-day Counseling traumatized children training at World Vision, 11-14 July.
• Verbal warnings for sexual harassment to two staff.
• One of the housemothers requested to also work in the afternoons during the school holidays, supervising the weekly boarders.
• Assistant of social worker to attend Khmer and driving lessons
